Are you noticing when a leadership opportunity presents itself?

Are you noticing when an oppotunity to lead someone presents itself to you? Here's a great story: I was walking out of a Subway the other day (the $5 footlong place, not the underground transportation) and I followed out the door a mom and her son. The boy was about 7-8 years old. I don't know why, but I stopped to watch them cross the street.
As they got to the curb, the boy stopped and the mom continued to cross. After the mom walked out into the street she noticed the boy had stopped and was holding out his hand for his mom to take. Now, to me, this boy was old enough to cross the street himself.
The mom said: " I am not going to hold your hand anymore, you can cross the street yourself."
The boy didn't say anything, looked both ways and slowly continued. It was a pretty cool thing to witness this young boy get out of his comfort zone and watch him gain more confidence once we made his way into the street. I'm sure from that point on the mom was no longer going to hold his hand.
This reminded me of a time when my own mother told me that she wasn't going to do my laundry, make my breakfast, or make my lunch for me anymore. She told me this on the first day of high school.
I thought to myself: Why is my mom being so mean to me? Now I realize she was only doing this to me in order for me to "grow up" and become someone more responsible for myself. I realize my mom was leading me!
Remember this, when you lead someone else, that person gains confidence. Why? Because leaders instill that confidence in their followers. You have to follow before you lead.
Everyday, we are either being led by someone, or doing the leading. Many people don't realize the opportunities to lead other people that present themselves to us everyday. My challenge to you is to start noticing these opportunities to lead other people. Notice these times to "offer your hand" to someone in need. Your going to have to open your eyes, open your mind, and maybe even open your heart to notice these situations that present themselves everyday!
